Influenced by her mother’s role as a head pattern maker, Wenlan Chia began experimenting with her own clothing designs while still a child in Taipei. Upon graduating university, Chia came to New York via Taipei almost 15 years ago to study art history at NYU, but found herself taking classes at FIT instead. She began making clothes for herself and when people stopped her on the street to ask where she bought them she realized designing was something she needed to do.

The Look
Since the company began in 2000, Twinkle’s designs have been vibrant bordering on whimsical including; chunky knit sweaters, scarves, caps, tuxedo jackets, chiffons, tweeds and cashmeres for an increasingly feminine and delicate look. A complete ready-to-wear line debut, at the February 2003 Gen Art Fresh Faces Fashion Show in NYC, was a critical success.

Who Wears It
With retail prices ranging from $180 to $800, Twinkle’s quirky and retro-inspired designs appeal to both downtown hipsters and more sophisticated shoppers.

“A runway show really is, like, the ultimate pure view of what the designer wants to show in the collection… when I have the whole look put together, people say, ‘OK, I can see those sweaters should be [worn] in this way.’â€? Wenlan Chia
