According to today’s Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), dresses and shorts are among spring’s bestsellers. Retailers said their customers are gravitating to city shorts for work, sometimes worn with a short, tailored jacket, and more casual, abbreviated cuffed versions on weekends. The dress, which hasn’t been a huge fashion trend in years, has made a major comeback in styles from halters to trapeze, wrap to shirtdresses, as an easy spring/summer option for work and weekend parties.
“We are having a great season. It is hands down the season of the dress,” said Julie Gilhart, senior vice president, fashion director at Barneys New York.”Because the dress silhouette this season was all about ease and fullness, it can be worn by a broader range of customers,” said Gilhart. Among Barneys bestsellers are styles from Lanvin, Nina Ricci, Balenciaga, Dries Van Noten and Proenza Schouler. “Anything with a fuller volume or jersey is selling,” said Gilhart.
“Shorts are driving the contemporary business,” Brands like Joie, Juicy, Theory and Vince are hot. “They range from city shorts to Bermudas to short shorts that are rolled up and cuffed.” “Shorts were shown on the runway very dressed up with a pump or a sandal platform. Women are wearing them with tailored jackets, which look fantastic.”
Another trend is extra-long T-shirts. “We’re moving away from belly-baring, skimpy tops,” she said. Solid T-shirts from James Perse are selling well. “Women are wearing the extra-long Ts over leggings or skinny jeans, maybe belted.”
Other top sellers have been cropped fitted jackets, bubble skirts, romantic blouses and trench coats.
