The biggest color for summer isn’t a color at all. That’s right (or that’s white) – this perennial warm-weather favorite is more popular than ever this summer, and nothing looks more chic than cool white in the sweltering heat. From breezy dresses to crisp oxfords, there is a look out there to suit every style. Here’s how to make this trend work for you:

A simple white dress looks fresh and feminine during the hottest summer days, and it can be dressed or down with a variety of accessories. Try a little white dress instead of black, go for all out romance in lace, or hippie chic in crochet. This one by Shoshanna (from everyone’s favorite site for deals on designer goods), is flattering and classic, but you can also get a basic white dress at Banana Republic.

White tees, tanks, and button-downs are always a great choice, but this is the season to branch out and try a white kimono top or a flowing tunic. Trendier shapes are easier to wear in white – it won’t look like you are trying so hard, especially when paired with white pants as well. Throw in a pair of tan or natural leather heels and a matching belt, and you’re set for summer. Try CeCe batwing sleeved sweater, available from Bluefly, is an excellent option, or pick up a variety of trendy shapes from H&M.

White pants are a frightening proposition for many, but the right pair can quickly become a staple. Obviously, you want to stay away from sheer fabrics and unlined pants, and it may be a good idea to go up a size, especially for white jeans. White sailor pants in particular are a fantastic summer look, and an easy way to cash in this year’s nautical trend. True Religion does some excellent white denim, or go for these wide leg pants by Peter Som (at Eluxury).

These are even more versatile as your favorite denim jacket because you can wear them with jeans without risking that wonderful “denim tuxedoâ€? look. A cute white jacket is also a great way to update your basics for spring and summer, and it’s a great cover-up for cool evenings. Get the look with this one by La Rok (from Bluefly) – you’ll wear it all summer long, or check out Armani Exchange for a long sleeved version of the look.

Like white pants, they’re a classic summer look and they pair well with almost everything. Try a sleek white skirt in place of your favorite denim style, and you’ll be hooked on the ease and classic chic of summer whites. A full white skirt is a great feminine look as well, and it can be dressed up or down. Old Navy has a great a-line take on the trend, or this cute Miu Miu skirt would be a welcome addition to any summer wardrobe.

Whether you work the white from head to toe, or just dip your toe in the trend with a white bag (also a major “itâ€? item for summer), remember that white clothes are a summer classic you can wear for seasons to come. White looks great with black, shades of brown, and colorful accessories; you’ll find that your white clothes are some of the most versatile in your closet. So say goodbye to black (at least for a season) and say hello to a white-hot summer.
