Dear Ms. Bean,
I’ll be 50 soon and hope to enter my new decade in style. I’m urban, work at Whole Foods, and help publish a healthy dining newsletter. I’ve gained 20 pounds recently but am shedding it with exercise and diet. I want a new wardrobe but am on a budget. Where do I begin?
Desperate but Determined
I envy your commitment to health and exercise, but before I feel guilty about missed appointments with my trainer and licorice for dinner, let’s get down to business.
Thank heavens for FedEx because there are many online stores just for you – the price conscious but stylish woman. From sister team b&lu (www.bandlu.com) come well-tailored duds in refreshing patterns. I adore their Lucca wrap dress (the wrap part is sewn in) for day or as a casual evening look. Black and white is hot right now, and print does work for fuller figures – as long as it is continuous. Slip on some red shoes and voila! You’re runway ready. Next, Ulla Popken (www.ullapopken.com) carries amazing tunics such as this this multi-colored one.
So free-spirited! Their black beaded top paired with silver metallic linen pants would be gorgeous for a night at Ravinia!
Lastly, Elisabeth carries lovely items from our beloved Liz Claiborne.
This skirt and jacket combo is perfection for a business lunch. Pass the wheatgrass! If you are totally against purchasing clothes online, Elisabeth (the store) is located in Oakbrook.
In the city, head to Vive La Femme (on Damen) for dresses and accessories. Prices may be higher, but they are currently having an end of season sale! Also, Target stocks lower-priced pieces from fashion greats such as Isaac Mizrahi. (SCS says the Target in the South Loop trumps the one on Elston.) While you’re there, grab some beaded necklaces, gold bangles, and a fun scarf to accessorize your new outfits.
Good luck and have fun! As always: try on lots and lots of clothes.
