Chicago. Another One Bites The Dust. Lord & Taylor at Water Tower To Close

October 5, 2006 • Magazine

It seems department stores are blowing outta the Windy City. First it was Marshall Field’s (now Macy’s). Then it was Carson Pirie Scott. Now Lord & Taylor on Michigan Ave. Not that I shop there, but this can not bode well for department stores.

Since 1975 Lord & Taylor has occupied the prominent Mag
Mile store in Water Tower Place next to Marshall Field’s Macy’s.  Doors will close next spring.

The store’s lease at the North Michigan Avenue site is
expiring and mall owner General Growth Properties Inc. wants to do something
else with the space. Rumor has it, Lord & Taylor was ejected for (are you ready for this?) a larger American Girl Place! Or as I like to call it: The Stepford "I made my grandparent’s drop $500" Doll store. Scary.
