First of all, just say no to Northface.

Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, it’s once again time to pack away your summer wardrobe and take out your warmest coats. With the vast array of stylish coats available, there’s no excuse for wearing an overly puffy parka or sticking with last year’s boring jacket.

The Tribune had an excellent idea with their monthly coat rundown, but their choices could be better. Check out these stylish and toasty picks for the upcoming winter months.

October: The weather isn’t quite bone-chilling yet, so you can get by with a leather jacket, especially if you top it with a big cashmere scarf. This one by Joe’s Jeans would be perfect over a feminine dress, paired with jeans, or with virtually anything!

November: It’s getting colder and windier, so try a wool peacoat in houndstooth or a flattering bright color. Braver fashionistas can also try a wool cape – it’s one of the trendiest silhouettes of the season. An added bonus of the cape: it looks great over this fall’s skinny pants. Try out the trend with this glen plaid cape from Max Studio.

December: Okay, it’s officially freezing out now, so you’ll want a ultra-warm coat. Get one that’s nipped in at the waist with a big fur collar for warmth with style. This Prada coat may be the ultimate holiday splurge, but you will look stylish and stay cozy for many winters to come.

January: During the coldest month of the year, it’s hard to resist the temptation to wrap up in a massive ski jacket, but don’t give in! There are plenty of coats out there that will keep you warm without sacrificing style. Here’s a Kenneth Cole coat that offers a way to wear thick down without looking like a marshmallow.

February: Since it is slowly but surely warming up by now, it’s time for a lighter coat, ideally in a rich color or print that will brighten up the darkest month of the year. This vintage inspired number by Milly is ladylike and fun.

March: Because spring is right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to pick up a new trench. There’s a reason the trench is perennially popular – you’ll be able to wear this gorgeous carmel colored trench by YaYa forever. A classic style in a gorgeous neutral, it’s a perfect investment piece.

Cold winters really do require a wardrobe of coats and winter accessories, so you if don’t have a collection, start shopping! Since you’ll be wearing your coat(s) for months or even years to come, you’ll want them to be extra fabulous.
