Last week we took a quick look at handful of German fashion designers (Das Dish: German Designers) making international headlines and took a snapshot of Berlin. But even the best-dressed woman feels naked without her favorite beauty buys. Of course, Europe has led the way for making cosmetics safer by imposing industry regulations and standards. As Rosemary Carstens reported for Alternative Medicine Magazine (January 2006), “The European Union (EU) has taken the international lead in guarding the public against chemical bombardment in personal and household products. In 2001 it classified the phthalates di-2ethylhexyl (DEHP) and di-n-butyl (DBP) as substances toxic to reproduction, saying they "should be regarded as if they impair fertility in humans" and "as if they cause developmental toxicity in humans." In 2003 the European Parliament banned reproductive toxicants such as DEHP and DBP, as well as other carcinogens and mutagens, in both domestic and imported cosmetics.” Known for their age-old commitment to natural health cures and preference for organic goodies, Germany has some of the strictest standards for beauty products in Europe. According the Beauty-on-line “ With regards to "natural" or "organic" cosmetics, Germany is certainly the most advanced of the European markets.” These German companies make woman and men beautiful, naturally.
