Maybe it’s the international success of The Queen that begs for a recap of her
fashion legacy. The film, which features only somewhat haunting and ambivalent images of the late Princess of Wales, begs us to question the public perception of the Princess in relation to the "real" Diana as encountered by the Royal family. And what better way to think about how we see the People’s Princess than by thinking about the wares in
appeared. From Valentino to Versace, Suzy Menkes reports how Diana’s style evolution parallels the tension and troubles that plagued her rumble with royalty. And with the news of Kate Middleton’s impending nuptuals, Menkes asks us to consider contemporary royalty’s current reliance on Pret-a-porter favorites like Prada. Alas, we see difficulty of dressing these ladies in a climate that is more tolerant of Hollywood royalty than of the inherited benefits of blue blood.
