Beauty Update. Second City Style Went Under the Needle. Before and After of Beauty and the Botox. Second City Style Fashion & Beauty Blog

A few weeks ago I reported my business partner, Carol and I were going under the needle to restore what was lost…youth.(See "I’ve Seen the Needle and the Damage Done.") I also said the follow-up would be replete with before and after photos. Well, here they are! Don’t toss your cookies.

Dr. Carolyn Jacob of Chicago Cosmetic Surgery and Dermatology literally
shaved years off our faces (OK, she injected it). She believes one can
stave off plastic surgery possibly indefinitely by re-volumizing and
rejuvenating the face or what she calls ‘facial rebalancing.’ Think of
it like refilling a deflated balloon with air. Luckily I wasn’t very
deflated yet, but Carol was!

For me, it was BOTOX and for Carol, it was BOTOX and Juvéderm which is an
injectable smooth gel that restores skin’s volume
and smooths away facial wrinkles and folds, like "smile lines" or
“parentheses” (nasolabial folds)—basically it’s the next generation Restylane.

Lucky us! Surgery is painful and an antiquated technique that does not solve the problem of looking saggy and hollow which happens as we age. Restylane and BOTOX have become more common and widely requested procedures, perfect for working women (and men) who don’t want or can’t afford the downtime. A filler substance is the perfect solution.

So what does this all cost? It varies. Some charge by the dose (cc), others by the area. For instance my forehead (which is what I had Botoxed) cost $350 and will last up to 4 months. Juvéderm and Juvéderm Plus (thicker gel for deep areas) costs roughly $750 per syringe and lasts anywhere from 4-12 months depending on the severity and the person.

Dr. Jacob commented "I have noticed the second round (when you go back for more) seems to be easier and many times less product is needed." There is also some evidence that filler substances may increase collagen growth.

Don’t scrimp with your face. BOTOX parties may seem like a great idea (especially after 2 glasses of wine), but a one-day course is all that’s required to be certified to pump you up (how scary is that?). Please visit your dermatologist or plastic surgeon for this type of procedure. Also, make sure to lay off blood thinners like Advil, aspirin and Ibuprofen for 1-2 weeks prior.

Now my forehead is smooth, yet I still have to ability to make my beloved facial expressions, just less of them (thankfully). Carol looks 10 years younger. I swear it was immediate. If you say she looks younger than me, I’ll kill ya!
