You know you’ve made it as a celebrity icon and not just a fly-by-night fashion fix when the Victoria and Albert Museum gives you an entire exhibition dedicated to your contribution to the world of fashion. And as Suzy Menkes reports, "Kylie — The Exhibition" (until June 10) comes to the V&A from Australia, where it has been touring since its start in Melbourne in 2005.
The exhibition includes Kylie’s costume legacy, album covers, portraits by famous photographers and videos of the singer in performance on giant screens. ‘I never realized what impact those gold hot pants would have," says Kylie Minogue about the tiny gilded shorts on show under glass at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
So much the better. Bringing people into a museum is a bonus and there is — or could have been — an intriguing tale to tell as Kylie, an ebullient and likable character, broke through the glass wall that separates show business from the fashion world.
