Retail Detail. The Deep Freeze. Second City Style Fashion Blog

March 8, 2007 • Shopping

February was a very cruel month to retailers. Especially for selling spring clothes. Frigid temperatures all but killed demand for lightweight spring apparel. Additionally, some industry
experts doubt this season’s fashions (styles like mini dresses in
bright geometric patterns and baby doll dresses) will have broad
appeal. More bad news…there’s concern that consumers will finally turn
frugal because of the housing market’s continuing slump, last
week’s stock market tumble and the threat of higher gasoline

are scheduled to report February same-store sales, or sales from stores
open at least a year, on Thursday, but several retailers, including
Limited Brands Inc., J.C. Penney Co. and Talbots Inc., have already
warned of disappointing results.

Granted, the shortest month of the year isn’t the most important month for retailers, it is a barometer of which spring fashion trends are appealing to the consumer and will take off.
