Chicago Event. The Sixth Annual Richard Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence. Second City Style Fashion Blog.

April 30, 2007 • Events

This past Saturday, Second City Style had the chance to attend one of Chicago’s hottest fashion events, the Sixth Annual Richard Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence.  This event showcased the work of student designers from four local arts schools as they competed for scholarship money and recognition from the Chicago fashion community.  The top prize of $3000 was awarded to Robyn Coffey for her "Post-apocalyptic Alice in Wonderland" theme.

The real highlight for SCS, however was meeting Project Runway alum Alison Kelly, who was serving as a judge for the night.  Seeing one of the participants from our favorite reality show in the flesh is always thrilling, but we got the chance to catch up with Alison and see what she’s been up to lately (she’s adorable in person and her own best advertisement).

In addition to having her own label Dahl (the name comes from her middle name, Dahlgren) featured on Shopbop, Alison’s work will soon be in Intermix boutiques across the U.S.  She also gave us a sneak preview of her upcoming fall collection in the form of her own ensemble – a minidress that combined metallic fabric with crochet (believe us, it’s chicer than it sounds) worn with leggings and ivory leather ankle boots.  Inspired by her recent trip to Mexico, she’s using plenty of rich yellows and blues paired with more neutral shades like beiges and tans.  Hand-crocheted detailing will play a part, and she’s designing her own prints as well.  She’s also working more with draping fabric directly on the form – to good effect, as evidenced by the masterful draping on the dress she wore to the event.

Here’s Second City Style’s Jacqueline Zenn and Carol Calacci with Alison Kelly:
