Dearly beloved,
We are gathered here today to get through this thing called winter
A bad word, winter, it means forever and that’s a mighty long time
But I’m here to tell you there’s somethin’ else
The wide leg pant
a pant of never ending happiness
You can always wear it – day or night
So when you call up that shrink in the Gold Coast
You know the one – “Dr. Everything’ll Be Alright”
Instead of asking him how much of your time is left
Ask him how wide you should go, baby!
Because in this life things are much harder when you have nothing to wear
In this life, you’re on your own
and if your wardrobe tries to bring you down, go crazy!

Prince earned legendary status in the music world because of his musical diversity and constant experimentation with different sounds, textures and genres. As varied as his musical and performance styles are, Prince has stayed true to one thing over the years…the wide leg pant.

We can learn a lot from Prince about the proper way to wear a wide leg pant. For example, the width of the wide leg trouser can make your legs look short. The diminutive star wears them with heels to keep his legs looking long. We should too. Prince balances out his top half by broadening his shoulders with shoulder pads and v-neck tops. We should too (broaden the shoulders, that is — be careful with shoulder pads).

Wide leg pants come in various styles this fall: pleated, low-rise and slouchy, high waisted, denim and wool. If not worn correctly, your frame can look overwhelmed by the volume of the pant. The key is to add height by wearing stacked heels, and create the illusion of balance through your tops. Here are some tips on how to do just that:

If you have a tummy…
It’s wise not to add extra bulk to the midriff area. These lightweight denim wide leg trouser jeans by Angelrox (available at for $176) feature their signature jeans4life mesh waistband. Fold the panel up to conceal a tummy or down to reveal. Either way, they look amazingly comfortable!

If you’re heavier on top overall…
Balance out your silhouette by choosing a style with some ease through the thigh, such as the Pallatzo Jean in Joplin Indigo by J Brand (available at Active Endeavors for $153 on sale).

If you’re heavier on the bottom…
Choose a fitted pair in a uniform dark wash to minimize your lower half, like this pair by BCBG called the “Tabatha” (available at for $238). An added bonus – the vertical crease down the middle of each leg helps to elongate them, making your bottom half appear even thinner!

Regardless of your body shape, paired with a feminine top and stacked heels you’ll look ultra chic and smart. To that I say, “Hallelujah!”
