What to Want for Winter

When I was little I used to start my Christmas list shortly after Labor Day, giving myself a good three month head start. While most children neatly printed items like Barbie Ice Cream Shop and Exclamation Perfume on a sheet of yellow legal paper, I created wish books (long before ever picking up the Neiman’s version), filling the sticky pages of old photo albums with magazine cut-outs and detailed descriptions of the things I hoped “Santa” would bring me.

So ladies, get your wish list ready. There are things to be had and gifts to be gotten. Just because it’s October (or any month of the year for that matter) doesn’t mean you can’t be dreaming and hoping for a red ribbon-wrapped Balenciaga work bag with some serious hardware on it.

Although retailers’ shelves are still filled with pumpkins and candy corn, I’m saying let it snow…as long as I have a cashmere sweater to feel snugly warm in. Bluefly has oodles of cashmere goodies like C3’s ivory peacock feather crewneck sweater ($149 at bluefly.com) as does Shopbop, especially in the sweater dress variety. Go for ultra-luxe with Jovovich-Hawk’s Viola sweater dress in 100% cashmere ($683 at shopbop.com) and style it similarly with opaque tights and feminine heels. If not cashmere, then a wool shift dress will do, especially if it’s only $98, courtesy of Banana Republic (I have it in black).

Custo Barcelona was the first fashion show I ever attended, and I consider that event one of the first of many that sealed my obsession with fashion. This year’s fall/winter collection is jam-packed with the funky, modern looks that first made Custo popular, and will comprise a few items on my wish list. But if the organic appliqués aren’t your thing, their new line also offers appealing looks like a kimono-sleeve dress and print blazers (that reminds me of some of the blazers Balenciaga sent down the runway in his Fall ’07 collection).

Even more appropriate for holiday are accessories — they’re smaller, very giftable and you don’t need to list your size. Net-A-Porter features “fall brights” as a must-have for the season, and I couldn’t agree more, especially when we’re talking Miu Miu jewelled heel pumps in red-patent bright. Pair sharp shoes with inky dark denim or with charcoal gray tights and a skirt for a polished with a punch look. Finally, for you jewelry lovers who believe a gift is only a gift when it’s a small box encasing another, smaller box, don’t forget to ask for winter’s best baubles, like Bing Bang’s mixed chain necklace. An exclusive at Barney’s New York, the necklace is an extra-long double chain of sterling and vermeil with diamond set ring. It’s just too much. Too fabulous. My list is now complete.
