Even a fashionista such as myself is bothered by this awful turn of events. Hey, I had deviated my punk days…many moons ago. The party has been over for the famed CBGB underground punk palace on The Bowrey for some time. The seedy home of the Ramones, New York Dolls, The Damned, The Jam and the Talking Heads to name a few, opened in 1973 and closed last year. The owners wanted to make more money in the area now infested with a Starbucks, While Foods, a hotel and retail establishments.
The 13,000 space has been leased to John Varvados which will open his store next spring. according to The NY Post, Bill Popp, who played CBGB from 1981 until is closed, mourned the The Bowrey’s turn for the purse. "Now it’s going to become a contrived type of store, with prices only for the yuppies who are taking over the neighborhood." Yep, there goes the neighborhood.
