NY Fashion Week Fall ’08. Betsey Johnson’s Beat Chick 30th Birthday Party

February 4, 2008 • New York Fashion Week Fall '08

Summary: If you accused us of going to Betsey Johnson because it’s just a damn fun (and we love the thong underwear swag), you would be right! Johnson threw herself a fabulous 30th birthday party for her fashion empire. We stepped back in time where she resurrected and paid homage to some of her favorites like a 1978 diagonal
striped one-piece bathing suit and a 1982 skull jumper (yep, that’s 1982 all right). As fun as it was, some of the styles were better left where they belong. The show began with 2 sailer stripe shirt clad bongo players smoking
fake cigarettes to set the mood of Beat Chick meets Jack Kerouac in the
basement parlor club. We then had a great time rocking out to the 1978 punk music love-fest like ‘Low Rider’ by War, ‘Blitzkreig Bop’ by the Ramones and ‘God Save the Queen’ by the Sex Pistols. Knowing these songs probably makes us too old to wear the clothes (they say you should never wear a trend the second time around, right?). And let’s face it, we are terrified of lurex leather leggings, denim jumpsuits and high-waisted super mini bloomer shorts…with good reason. The show was immense with 60 looks, but oddly, we didn’t want to leave this time capsule.

However we come for Johnson’s signature final bow runway cartwheels and she did not disappoint. Wearing a flower-power dress, black tights, hot
pink socks and black ballet flats, finished the show kicking off her shoes and walking down the runway with her beautiful toddler granddaughter.

Key Looks: lace-up dresses, patent leather hot pants, fringed suede jacket, leopard print leggings, suede and feather halter top, catsuits, keyhole sheath, horizontal striped sweater dress, off-the-shoulder top with a flowing red skirt (with suspenders).
