NY Fashion Week Fall ’08. Marc Jacobs. Taste Without a Tantrum.

February 8, 2008 • New York Fashion Week Fall '08

Summary: My inner cynic says that last year’s collection was a bit too bold for the consumer’s closet (although it was an amazing indulgence on the runway!) — and that’s what accounts for the tame fall presentation. Somewhere between the pretty pieces that launched Jacobs into world renown and the cautious, educated optimism of his last two shows lies the neutral, pastel and polished palette we saw come down the runway. It seems as if the spectacle has shifted from his garments to his choice of entourage — Sonic Youth, Victoria Beckham (?) and bribery?

Color & Fabric: For someone who just discovered the divine madness of his own body, Jacobs surprisingly stuck with floor-length, dresses, modern pantaloon-style trousers, creamy white jackets and beautiful gray tops and sweaters, complimented by the occasional pinstripe or floppy bow.. Like his colleagues he towed the conservative line. Innovation came largely with geometry and the choice of a pastel palette. Even his accessories were tame, bark-colored flat boots and black pumps are what anchored each ensemble.
