While North Damen Avenue is home to several of the best retail boutiques and shops in Chicago, it is also the location of an 100 year old water main than badly needs to be repaired. But, shoppers, have no fear! The Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce is taking extra measures to make sure we can still get to our favorite shopping district without being hassled by the construction. And with spring collections arriving in stores any day now, who has time to be hassled!?
The installation of the new water main represents a "pivotal investment for the North Damen shopping village’s infrastructure." The construction will take place on Damen between Armitage and Webster from now to April, which is about four blocks long, currently on the west side of the street. The work will start on Webster and Damen and move south toward Armitage. Accommodations have been taken to ensure shoppers and residents of the area ample parking opportunities, and traffic signage will be displayed along Damen/Webster and Damen/Armitage in order to alert drivers to the construction. Valet parking may become an option in the near future, and the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce is considering trolleys from Milwaukee/North/Damen to the North Bucktown area during the weekends. Hey, just think how safe and clean the water will be come April!
