Oscar Celebrity Style. The Very Good, the Very Bad and the, Eh

February 25, 2008 • Celebrity Style

Some are saying the 80th Annual Academy Awards red carpet was a little boring last night. We disagree. As usual there were many who played it safe (in black), but some took risks and it paid off. Besides, after a long writer’s strike…we were just elated to even have a red carpet! So here are our (OK, my) picks for the usual categories.

The Very Good…

Anne Hathaway in a stunning red Marchesa gown and Harry Winston diamonds

Marion Cotillard in a stunning fish scale Jean Paul Gaultier gown, Chopard jewels and a Swarovski clutch. From head-to-toe she was flawless.

Penelope Cruz in a navy, feathered and embroidered Chanel Haute Couture gown, Chopard diamonds and a Roger Vivier clutch

Miley Cyrus in a red chiffon Valentino gown and Neil Lane jewels

Jessica Alba in a stunning plum, feathered Marchesa gown and Cartier diamonds

Amy Adams in an emerald Proenza Schouler gown, Fred Leighton diamonds and an empty vintage bag

Katherine Heigl in a red Escada gown, Ryan Ryan jewels and Jimmy Choo shoes and clutch.

Kristin Chenoweth in my favorite black gown (because it was over rose) of the evening by Armani Privé and Fred Leighton diamond hair clips.

Kerri Russel in a champagne organza Nina Ricci gown and my favorite necklace of the evening….a 46-carat-diamond H. Stern stunner.

The OK and Sometimes Disappointing…

Cameron Diaz in a John Galliano blush gown, Bulgari jewels and a Roger Vivier clutch. The dress needed to be pressed and was a little lost on Cameron’s skin-tone. Just once we would love to see her in a massive diamond necklace…which she desperately needed. It’s the Oscars! Go a little crazy.

Jennifer Garner in an Oscar de la Renta gown, Van Cleef & Arpels jewels and a Roger Vivier clutch. The necklace was stunning, but I wasn’t wowed by the dress. Why black?

Cate Blanchett in Dries Van Noten, Lorraine Schwartz jewels and a Roger Vivier clutch. OK, this woman usually gets it dead-on, but she loses points for the neckline which does nothing for her. It looks like the dress wore her. Not the other way around. Yeah, we know she is pregnant, but so what? She usually is. And, usually blows away the crowd.

Nicole Kidman in a Balenciaga gown, a 1,399-carat diamond necklace designed by L’Wren Scott and a Bottega Veneta clutch. Even the necklace couldn’t wake up this snooze fest.

Heidi Klum in a red silk taffeta Haute Couture by John Galliano gown. Kudos for wearing pink jewels which will probably now be a trend. This dress is being auctioned online to benefit Red Heart Truth charity. Bid on it here at MyCokeRewards.com. It was OK…we just expect more from our Heidi.

Hilary Swank in a black Atelier Versace gown, Chopard diamonds and a Ferragamo clutch

Ellen Page in a vintage black Jean Louis Scherrer gown and a Fred Leighton necklace

Renee Zellweger in Carolina Herrara (as usual) and Cartier jewels. The dress could be stunning, but who can get over her mess of a mop which just kills this and any outfit?

Laura Linney playing it safe and a little boring in a navy Michael Kors gown, Cathy Waterman jewelry and a Ferregamo clutch

Amy Ryan also playing it safe in a one-shouldered navy Calvin Klein gown, H. Stern diamond earrings and a Chopard bracelet.

The Bad and Sometimes…Very Bad

Best Supporting Actress winner, Tilda Swinton in a dress by Hefty, er Alber Elbaz. We loved the diamond Damiani cuff though.

Jennifer Hudson in a white beaded Roberto Cavalli gown and Neil Lane diamonds. I just can’t get over how horrid her chest looks in the dress. The cut is not right for her body. She needs a bolero.

Best Actor winner Daniel Day-Lewis’ boots are awful, but the pale in comparison to his wife, Rebecca Miller’s gown.

You gotta love the stripper gone Academy Award winning screenwriter (for Juno) scenario. But, Diablo Cody’s leopard print, slit up to there Dior gown, was no stunner. And flats? Come on!

Kelly Preston in a stoplight yellow Roberto Cavalli gown and Lorraine Schwartz jewels. I hated the color on her. It clashed with her skintone.

Diane Lane in David Meister. This pains me because I absolutely adore her and think she usually gets it right. Brown was just a bad color for the red carpet and too fall a color. It’s spring! Brighten it up a bit!

Do you realize that here you say Jennifer Hudson looks awful (and I wholeheartedly concur) but two posts back, another blogger raves about her dress?

Well, we encourage our writers to have a different point of view. I don’t agree with Simona’s assessment of Jennifer Hudson personally, but I would not tell her what she has to write. Frankly, I also thought George Clooney’s girlfriend chose a totally wrong and matronly (somewhat boring) gown. She looked like schlock next to that stunning specimen…but I like that we all don’t have the same taste. It would be rather boring….don’t you think?
I was wondering if someone was going to catch that! Kudos. 🙂
