I wouldn’t have wanted to be anywhere near PETA headquarters on Tuesday, after Jean Paul Gaultier showed his fall collection in Paris. Look after look that came down the runway didn’t just ‘involve’ fur, there were actual animals (teeth and eyes and even claws) slinking down the cat walk… no pun intended. From crocodile tails to fox legs, Gaultier’s furs weren’t even in the same universe as your old mink coat.
Further more, this wonderfully excessive collection showed lots of animal prints (weird, I know) and deconstructed trench coats, which the designer is known for. While the color scheme settled around blacks and browns, there were a few looks that popped like the mustard yellow and the bold leather gloves. The androgyny was ever-present, but at the same time we also saw some gorgeous metallic floor-sweeping gowns. Unfortunately for them, the furs stole the show. Gaultier has once again reminded us what form the drama of high fashion comes in.
