What Floral Are You Wearing? On Your Designer Dress?

As you already know, flowers are really big this season! We are also seeing this trend continuing for fall. So I thought I would like to talk to someone who really knows about florals to perhaps get some insight into this overwhelming trend. I spoke to a "flower expert" Michael Gaffney, who is Director of the Chicago School of Flower Design.

When I showed Michael some of the Spring 08 runway looks he said, "Flowers follow fashion. Everything goes around and comes around. People are much more aware of flowers now than ever before. Flowers are now a part of everyday life, you can get them at the corner grocery store!"

"What these designers are showing are mostly spring blooms like peonies, poppies and roses. They also show what we call line flowers, or florals with stems, such as calla lilies."

Michael also told me he uses fashion designers as a way of understanding his clients. When a woman comes to him for floral arrangements for her wedding, for example, he notices that today’s brides know the names of the flowers. They know what flowers are favorites of movie stars, and many know exactly what they want. Then he’ll say, "Oh, your a Vera Wang girl…" or "Your a Kate Spade girl…" He can then go on to give her the floral designs that are just right for her!

To identify the florals in fashion, use this handy foliage glossary.
