Dressing for Another Continent (& Currency)
This column is a tribute to a dear friend of mine, Hilary, who just returned from two years abroad in Thailand. She returned to the United States this very week and she made some suggestions for her first (budgeted) shopping trip back home. Back to a different fashion realm, and a different dollar, here is what Hilary said she craves after two years overseas.
First and foremost – Hilary is a footwear connoisseur. One of her greatest hardships abroad was not necessarily finding footwear, but rather finding footwear that fit her above-Thai-average shoe size. After surviving in flip flops for two years, I think it’s time for her to show some glamour to that upcoming pedicure.
For my dear friend’s first summer back in the United States, I think her first acquisition should be a colorful pair of wedges or platforms. These adorable Betsey Johnson’s and Seychelles are perfect for those window-shopping excursions for the upcoming season. And for those more glamorous events that involve a little black dress, she will surely make some heads turn with these Boutique 9 sandals and BCBG peep-toes.
Hilary’s next request was more on the casual side. In her entire Thai wardrobe, she could not find one thin sweater or sweatshirt that had a zipper that started at the bottom of the garment and ended on the very top. Besides footwear that wouldn’t produce blisters, she was very enthusiastic in her want of a full-zippered top.
Lululemon might be out of her price quota, but these two adorable options from Torn could provide both comfort and fashion en route to that extra Yoga class—affordable with her additional loungewear savings. And I know it doesn’t quite fit her requirements, but I think the wrap hoodie would add a great edge to her sweater quotient. And with her budget preference, the fact that the designer Young Fabulous & Broke produces such a garment would in my opinion solidify the sale.
Throughout the years of our friendship, Hilary has demonstrated the skill of taking simple attire and turning it into an outfit of effortless chic glinting with ingenuity. Therefore Hilary’s requests of assistance in discovering these additions to her bilingual wardrobe leave me anxious to see what additions she will contribute to the fashion scene back home. I know I won’t be disappointed. Welcome home, Hilary!
