I’m back home from Paris for the summer. There’s nothing quite like the USA in the summer — the Fourth of July fireworks, the sweet corn on the cob, and being flat broke on my last vacation of college. (Needless to say, the Euro-Dollar exchange rate has been detrimental to my bank account). I’ve managed to allot myself a sweet $500 to get my summer essentials. But with all the trends this season, will I be able to make my budget?
First on the list… I’ve been pining over a graphic dress for some time nowand of course they are in season when I have no money in my bank. I love the long sleeves/short hemline of these dresses — a revealing yet balanced cut perfect for summer days. I really want the Betsey Johnson (sigh), but the J. Crew‘s color and pattern are nice too!
1. Betsey Johnson Tunic Dress — $385 at Neiman Marcus
2. Antonia Dress — $165 at J. Crew
Call me nostalgic, but I’m ecstatic that jelly sandals are back. I’ll never forget my favorite pink pair from Gap Kids circa 1994. And they make the best beach shoes. I’ve had my eye on the Givenchy pair since I saw them in French Vogue, but I’ll have to settle for the MIAs Not a bad substitute as they resemble my childhood pair perfectly!
Continuing with the retro theme, I’m obsessed with high-waisted shorts. I love the 18th Amendment pair with its anchor embellishment at the hip (nothing screams ‘summer’ quite like the nautical motif). But why pay over $100 for a trend that will fade before fall? I’ll take the American Apparel pair, please (but watch out! They are unisex – which is so American Apparel).
Always my favorite item to shop for, I’m in dire need of summer cocktail attire. I’m looking for something sequined (a perennial favorite of mine), short, and sexy… I’d kill for the MLH dress (so retro! so peacock!), but the embellishments, the cut, and the price of the Karta dress fit accordingly with my summer stipulations.
Although this trend hit the US a year late (I had gladiator sandals last summer), I need replacements. I must say, this year’s colors and embellishments are unlike any I have seen in Europe. I’m currently obsessed with all things gold, so naturally I love Miu Miu‘s golden interpretation of the gladiator sandal. But I’ll have to settle for Jeffrey Campbell‘s golden studs.
To Dye For
By far my favorite trend for summer 2008, my wardrobe would not be complete without something tie-dye. Although I wanted the C&C dress, it’s more practical for me to get the Xhilaration tie-dye swimsuit, as I need new bathers anyway (I love killing two fashion birds with one very trendy stone!).
I could have spent: $1,855
My grand total: a very cool $489.13 — I made it under $500!
Now that’s what I call bargain hunting.
