Summer Essentials. Waterproof Makeup and Skin Care.

June 9, 2008 • Beauty

As the weather finally warms up in Chicago, I’ve noticed friends struggling with their skincare regimen. The muggy heat, sporadic showers, and unreal humidity make it difficult to plan what to wear on your face, and even more impossible to keep it there once you’ve put it on! After one hot-and-steamy-but-not-in-a-good-way night out for a friend’s birthday, my six roommates and I all came home looking like we’d been at the gym and not in Lincoln Park. So, disgusted by our sweaty yet not glowing appearances, we put our heads together to come up with the best Summer-proof stuff for the city. Here were the all-around favorites:

Dior Diorshow Black Out Waterproof Mascara
, $24

This mascara is one of the most fulfilling and worthwhile beauty buys. If $24 seems a little pricey for one tube of mascara, give it a try, because we think you’ll be pleased with how freakin’ long it lasts! The waterproof formula simply does not run, and looks as fresh as any washable kind. It won’t flake or dull your lashes down!

Maybelline Waterproof Great Lash Mascara
, $6

The perennial pink favorite. Works just about as well as any higher priced brand, and all you have to do is drop into your local drugstore.

Benefit Benetint Cheek and Lip Stain, $28
This increasingly well-known and widely-hyped product really is all its cracked up to be. As a stain, it is water-resistant and will keep you colored without getting cakey, like a powder-based or cream-based product. Plus, since it’s made with rosewater, it’s naturally hydrating. Can’t be beat in the heat!

Tarte Cheek Stain, $28

This stain has all the benefits of Benetint in a gel formula and a variety of shades (although we think this pinkish-red Flush hue is the most flattering on the most skin tones). And if the gel push-up blush scares you a little with it’s potential heaviness or stickiness, don’t worry–it’s water-based! Again, good over or under sunscreen for long hours in the Summer sun.

Malin+Goetz SPF 30 Sunscreen, $16

This brand is simple in the best way, from its no-nonsense packaging that straightforwardly lists the ingredients, to its plain mission statement of balanced pH levels. I certainly didn’t believe my friend when she said wearing this sunscreen was like wearing nothing, and I was totally wrong. The "modern day apothecary" delivers an incredibly light sunscreen, as opposed to a moisturizer with SPF. It honestly won’t screw with your skin, and it won’t sweat off either. Glory!

Lancome Absolute Replenishing Cream Bx
, $115
This is one of the pricier items on my Summer-must list, but I tested it with a touch from my friend’s pot, and it is heavenly. The product’s motto is "Repair. Intense Moisture. Clarity."–or, in other words, exactly what I need for Summer wear. The moisturizer packs an SPF of 15, and fights the visible effects of age and hormonal changes. Good for skin that wants to look young or actually is young!

With the basics of great lashes, good color, and excellent protection, you can maintain a fresh Summer look despite the heat and humidity. And these products will deliver!

I think you should have Laurnen Hutton’s eyeliner on your list. I never leave the house without it!
