There are millions of diets that claim to slim you down fast while "detoxing" your system- as if that is something beneficial for your body that it needs. According to NY Magazine and their resident expert Dr. David Robbins of Beth Israel Medical Center, these diets can carry side effects as bad those lists of awkward side effects in Viagra and Cialis TV ads. Here are the diets and their intended and unintended outcomes…
• Oprah Winfrey is currently on the 21-Day
Cleanse. For this she must cut out all animal products, gluten,
caffeine, sugar, and alcohol for 21 days. Dr.
Robbins calls this "foolish."
• Gwyneth Paltrow does Dr. Joshi’s Holistic Diet. This requires
avoiding acidic, toxic, and refined foods to make the body’s pH balance
alkaline. Dr. Robbins calls it "dangerous" and notes headaches, stomach
aches, and nausea could occur. (Why is alkaline desirable anyway? Wouldn’t it be better to be balanced?)
•Robin Quivers does the Martha’s Vineyard Detox Diet, which promises to
blast 21 pounds in 21 days. The dieter drinks juice and has multiple
colonics. Dr. Robbins says this is futile, since colons don’t contain
toxic residue. (Multiple colonics in 21 days? Yikes. We’d prefer to avoid the colonic altogether.)
• Beyoncé, in case you haven’t heard a hundred times already, did the Master Cleanse to slim down for Dream Girls. Dr. Robbins says this can cause "profound diarrhea and nausea." (I never want to know what makes those conditions "profound" as opposed to say… regular.)
Many of the commenters on this article over at the NY Magazine website thought that maybe Gwyn’s and Oprah’s diets weren’t so bad. The vegetarian and vegan parties certainly thought the doc was giving such diets a hard time. However, the main point of the article was to show that these diets aren’t for health purposes–they’re for weight loss.
