The face of Bucktown’s most popular street and shopping hub has been steadily changing for the past three years, if not longer. Where once there were locally owned boutiques…corporate retailers have now moved in, including Bebe, BCBG, Marc Jacobs, and most recently, Club Monaco, who had their grand opening celebration last night. Located at 1731 N. Damen Avenue, the classic black and white apparel that is Club Monaco‘s signature look is simply laid out in a space that is equally as neutral with black and white photos done by local artists.
As someone who works at a boutique just down the block and is normally saddened by the opening of yet another corporate retailer in a neighborhood that was known for its unique shopping, I can’t say that I am completely disappointed with the arrival of Club Monaco. Their merchandise offers a selection of basics such as tanks, tees and the requisite black trouser, items everyone needs in their wardrobe, all at reasonable prices. While the store is certainly not the norm for the old Bucktown, the fact that Bucktown neighbors came to check out the selection with some even making purchases, I am sure Club Monaco will be a great place shop in the new Bucktown of Chicago.
