This is one of the most monotonous times of the year for anyone into fashion – it is too soon and probably too hot to start looking at fall pieces, but everything summery is beginning to look like old news. Transitioning between seasons can be downright dull.

On the other hand, now is when all the summer clothing and accessories are being marked down (if the items you covet haven’t been discounted yet, chances are they will be soon), so it is a great time to invest in pieces that will take you through fall. Just stick to neutrals or darker shades as well as season-less fabrics like jersey, silk, or rayon, because pastel or tropical shades and materials like linen tend to have a one-season shelf life.

Something charcoal with a flattering drape would definitely do the trick, such as this Graham and Spencer tunic dress – it would be perfect with inky black or cobalt blue tights this fall, and you could even wear it with gladiator sandals right now. This black Loeffler Randall bomber jacket could also serve you well immediately – throw it over a little top on chilly summer evenings and wear it as a light jacket when the days turn cooler.

Crave something a little more colorful? This Anna Sui top has a bohemian flair without being costume-y, and the rich blues and greens are deep enough to take you well into autumn. On the lighter side, this soft gray Lara Miller sweater would work over sundresses (great for places that crank the air conditioning up high) and it would be a great layering piece in the winter.

Of course, if the idea of buy it now, wear it later doesn’t appeal to you, there is no time like the present to pick up something classically elegant, like this sleek architectural sheath by Orlando Espinoza. It is not so much a “get it now, wear it later” dress as it is a “get it now, wear it forever” dress.
