There is something about fall fashions that makes me want to spend, spend, and then spend some more. Maybe it is the air turning cooler and crisper, maybe it is the back-to-school spirit, or maybe I just want to do my part to support the economy. Whatever the motivation is, there are certainly a lot of items I covet for this coming season. Fortunately for me (and you), however, there are plenty of affordable pieces that look like they could have come straight from the runways.

Let’s start with shoes, because they are the foundation of every outfit and because fall fashions always mean lots of amazing boots. This year is no exception, with boot options ranging from slouchy flat boots to equestrian-inspired over the knee numbers to quirky little ankle booties. In fact, if you are in the market for that last option, you are in luck because Target is carrying a pair of high-heeled oxfords that are just about perfect, and perfectly priced at $34.99.

Another key fall trend is anything ombre; these styles can also be incredibly flattering when worn correctly (the lighter shade should be on the areas you want to highlight). For example, this sleek wine-hued DKNY frock would show off a slim midsection and elegant collarbones while sweeping the eye away from everything below the waist – and it would be perfect with black tights and fall’s platform pumps. Girly-girls will also want to pick up something lacy for evenings, perhaps with a vintage feel like this glamorous Max Studio dress.

One item you will want to wear under all your tailored jackets (and on its own in the evenings) is the ultra-feminine blouse. A throwback to the fifties and early sixties, these blouses are usually made of silk or satin, and feature girly details like lace trim or an elegant bow at the neckline, like this classic choice from Banana Republic that would slip nicely under a tailored jacket and pencil skirt.

While a wide variety of handbag styles and silhouettes appeared on the catwalks, many of the bags had one thing in common: they were seriously large. Oversize handbags have a practical bent too, particularly for city girls – you can fit everything you need for the day inside, with room to spare. This pleated Kenneth Cole hobo looks ultra-luxe, but at only $318.00 it seems like a downright steal compared to most of the chic bags out there.

Judging by these few picks alone, it is clear that you don’t have to spend a mint to look up-to-the-minute this season. Just shop wisely with an eye towards value, and you’ll end up looking – and feeling – like a million bucks.
