Top Trends For Fall. Saks Want It! List & Interview With Michael Fink

September 4, 2008 • Fashion

Every fall Saks Fifth Avenue thinks long and hard about their Fall Want It! List. The list is comprised of the most coveted, must-have items for men and women of the fall 2008 season according to the women’s fashion director, Michael Fink. I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Michael and not only review his list, but ask a few questions.

Michael Fink, Vice President Women’s Fashion Director for Saks Fifth Avenue

Since Second City Style is focused on women’s fashion, we are going to share the women’s list with you! Drum roll please….

2008 Fall Want It! List for Her…

An alluring confection of ruffles, bows and lace. Let it peek out of a suit all day likeLily_bow_blouse
the cami of yore, then ditch the jacket for a dramatic evening.

Your bag shouldn’t be more complicated than its contents. Solution: grab a simply chic carry-all in leather or metallic. Micheal also recommends adding a shoulder strap and making sure the bag is cushy and not too structured so it’s more practical for carrying all day long.

Slim lines and exquisite tailoring remind you of an era when people took the time to dress. Think of it as your foundation for building your wardrobe. Just add a belt to perfect the shape. It’s time to celebrate your body!

There is so much new variety you could go a month wearing only boots: mid-calf, flat, slouchy, shoe bootie or over-the-knee. Forget about shoes (OK, not really). What kind of heel you ask? Stacked, stiletto or flat…they all work.

Casual as a sandal, unstructured as a cardigan and soft as a whisper. Best when it’s too warm for winter coats. Look for cropped styles with fly-away backs  and three-quarter sleeves. According to Michael, the look is slightly retro 80’s…push the sleeves up, but don’t wear your boyfriend’s jacket.

In a season of refined styles, the ‘wow’ comes at the neckline. Lots of color. Lots of shine. And size—as always—matters. Just don’t pull a Madonna (that picture looked painful).

A coat for all seasons, complete with novelty stitches like cables and ribs. Remember to belt it to emphasize the waist. The belt should be skinny and the sweater should be slightly open exposing a few inches of the outfit beneath.

1. Natural color. 2. Soft, rosy cheeks (as after a brisk walk). 3. Glossy lips. 4. Defined eyes. 5. Luminous shine.

Here are some of the questions I asked Michael Fink:

SCS: How do these looks translate for women who are not 25?Posen_top_handle

MF: I feel the items on the Want It! List are appropriate for all customers regardless of age or size.

SCS: In this economy, what are women really buying this season?
MF: We are seeing more emotional purchases of items not already in their wardrobe. Women are responding to whatever is over-the-top to them whether it be color, print or details. Items that are easy to throw on are proving big sellers as are shoes! Shoes, as always, seem to drive the engine.

SCS: What do you feel are the worst trends of this season? The ones we should avoid?
MF: Put away anything with volume. It’s all about the body this season. Same goes for the maxi-dress. It was fantastic for summer, but is not appropriate for fall. We are in a more classic cycle so the good news is that classic tailoring is back.

OK, but what about those horrid pleather leggings we are seeing on young celebs?
MF: (laughing) Well, if you are 19 and a size zero I say work it! My thought is that if you already wore it once in your lifetime, let the new generation interpret the trend. (We couldn’t agree more).

SCS: What is the best style advice you can impart on us?
MF: Be honest with yourself. You know your body. Take yourself in front of a 3-way mirror and look at your body in an outfit from all angles…don’t take a friend (we all know they lie)! Check for fit and that your outfit is situation and age appropriate. However, make sure there is some sort of personalized identity in there somewhere.
