Off-Price Retail, TJ Maxx & Boston: Part I

November 20, 2008 • Fashion

So this past Monday and Tuesday I was in Boston visiting with TJ Maxx/Marshalls. Their goal in bringing a group of fashion writers and bloggers was to hopefully not only change our perceptions and understanding of off-price retailing, but those of our readers.

Admittedly I am a bit of a fashion snob. I abhor the term ‘recessionista’, but honestly who is really willing to pay full price for anything these days? I still want to buy and wear Oscar, YSL and Vera…I just want to pay less for it. I am always a ‘recessionista’ I guess, but good taste must prevail no matter the price or it’s not really a bargain worth having.

There was so much information imparted on us in such a short time, I don’t even know where to begin or where to take this post so I guess it will be organic. In fact, I think I will separate it into two posts.

We arrived in Boston Monday afternoon, checked into our hotel (The Farimont Copley Plaza) and had a few hours before dinner to walk Newbury Street. I spent my freshman year of college in Boston, but it has been several years since I have been so it was like being in a new city for me. As an 18 year-old from outside Buffalo, NY I thought Newbury Street was a shopping mecca! You know what? It still is. Nichelle Gainer from 55 Secret Street, Aly Walansky of She Knows and Adriana Nova from The Fashion Bomb and yours truly took an exploratory stroll down Newbury. Newbury Street is probably the most perfect shopping street in all of the U.S…to me that is. It is quaint and a mix of high and low retailers (Chanel, Zara, YSL, H&M) with some local boutiques tossed in that even NYC can’t boast.

Newbury Street & Shu Uemura where we spent a lot of time playing with makeup.

Inside Shu Uemura where we played with makeup far too long. The holiday collections are amazing.

Matsu…a perfectly edited boutique we all fell in love with.
