Girl's Best Friend: Three Distinct Jewelry Personalities

Deep down, every woman knows that the best things come in small packages. That’s right, I’m talking about jewelry. I’m of the opinion that there are three distinct jewelry personalities – women can sometimes have characteristics of more than one, but at the end of the day, each of us fits into one of these groups. So it goes to follow that if you are shopping for something that sparkles this holiday season (or just making your own Christmas list), consider her jewelry style first.

Outrageous Bling — We mean major carats, baby, real or fake. These women channel Beyonce and Marilyn Monroe when picking out their jewelry, and too much is never enough – they love statement necklaces, chandelier earrings, and cocktail rings. However, the diamonds don’t always need to be real; sometimes that perfect piece of costume jewelry does the trick. While they may occasionally borrow from the other groups, none of their jewels are without their trademark sparkle and shine. Labels to look for include Kenneth Jay Lane, Roberto Cavalli, and Erickson Beamon. We recommend these chandelier earrings from top-notch costume jeweler Kenneth Jay Lane and the very appropriately named Dior Caberet ring.

Luxe Feminine — These girls covet the sort of graceful and even minimal pieces that let their own beauty shine through; classic chains, small pendants, studs or tiny hoops, and pearls (naturally) all fit the bill. Of course, Tiffany is their number one pick, but Chanel, Michael Kors, and indie designers like the Second City Store’s own Kristen Amato and Jules also fit the bill. We like this five strand mixed-metal Jules necklace and the Ravenswood earrings from K.Amato.

Bold Bohemian — Anything with a multicultural flair like stacks of bangles, chunky beaded necklaces, or unusually shaped rings tends to catch their eye. They also tend to pile on the jewelry and subscribe to the philosophy that if one fabulous piece looks good, ten more look amazing (restraint doesn’t tend to be their strong suit). Of course, heading to your local ethnic shops is a good idea (where else can you purchase bangles by the pound?), but when you want something higher end, try something from Vivre’s carefully curated collection of haute bohemian pieces, such as the silver bead necklace from Nicole Romano or these intricate Haskell earrings encrusted with green aventurine stones.

And there you have it. While it certainly can be fun to experiment with another type’s look, when it comes to making a jewelry investment or buying a fabulous present for your favorite girl, it is ideal to stick with the proven signature style.
