Spring Into Spring. Jumping Onto the Jumpsuit Bandwagon

February 4, 2009 • Fashion

I mention this trend intrepidly. Why? Even though it seemed every designer trotted at least one down the spring '09 ready-to-wear runway (Marc by Marc Jacobs and Betsey Johnson, several), this look isn't for most. For one, you need to be incredibly tall and two, you need to be incredibly thin to pull this look…off well. Sadly however, I can no longer ignore the impending trend of the jumpsuit.

How to wear them:

Again, be careful. This trend has the potential to scream 'fashion victim' which is never a good thing. Last night, for instance, I attended an event in a virtual snowstorm and to my utter amazement saw someone wearing the short jumpsuit version in a spring fabric with black tights. Did it look stupid? Um, yes. Since I wore a grey jumpsuit to death in the 80's, I personally will be avoiding this trend this time around. Yet, I am partial to a Halston-esque 70's slinky knock-off on the right tall, slender person. However, that doesn't necessarily mean you shouldn't try a more forgiving shorts version (romper).

Keep in mind, many of the jumpsuits do not have back pockets which could potential spell disaster or 'wide load' across your backside. If you chose a blousier, less fitted version (or as I like to call it…a onesie), make sure to belt it. It is important to create the illusion of a waist with a jumpsuit or you could look like an oompah loompah.

At this point it is going to be hard to find a jumpsuit on sale. Even though the trend was around a bit for Fall '08 in heavier wool varities, the look is really expected to take off for spring.
