Second City Style was invited backstage before the Twinkle by Wenlan Fall '09 show. Held at the Classic Car Club Manhattan, we walked through an antique auto showroom with a huge movie screen and the smell of popcorn in the air to get backstage, so we knew this had to be good.
Normally I am not a fan of going backstage before a show because I always feel in the way of models being made up, stylist running around and generally people tripping over one another. I prefer the spectacle and element of surprise from my seat. However, there were no seats and I wanted the chance to ask Wenlan about her collection myself…not just learn about it from the program. Carol and I had met the designer 3 years ago and were thrilled she remembered us. It was also surprisingly calm backstage. Models were posing with their friends with rollers in their hair and some were even eating!
When asked about her collection, Wenlan said she was inspired by the innocence of the 50's . When everything seemed charming, cheerful and very ladylike. Her collection was going to be more structured, yet modern…a la Audrey Hepburn.
Would there be some of her signature chunky knits mixed with patterned prices? Of course.
Lead hair stylist John Ruidant of Redken used huge rollers to produce a natural, playful and youthful look on the models. As the inspiration was the 1950s there were deep side parts, clean, long natural hair and loose waves. Makeup was by MAC and makeup artist Gregory Arlt went with a dewy face and bright hot pink lips.
