Summary: "Mercy, Mercy Me…things ain't what they used to be." The Marvin Gaye song played repeatedly in the background of Oscar de la Renta's Fall '09 show and with the stock market tanking this week, we certainly didn't need to be reminded. del la Renta siad his collection was "a fresh look atthe modern feminine wardrobe." And Oscar did what Oscar does best, deliver refined clothes for ladies who lunch on the Upper East Side and extravegant gowns for ladies who attend grand fetes on the Upper East Side. This season, however, not everything was a sure-fire-hit. I hate to say it, but the designer almost seemed desperate to please everyone so there was a hodgepodge effect to this collection. Luxe colors were key as were his fabrics. The gold cowboy boot shoes (circa 1990), crazy scary updos and closing over-the-top duo of strapless crinoline gowns were misses for me. But, again, the master has spoken. The economy stinks…get over it!
