Last week I had the privilege of interviewing celebrity hair colorist and design god Joel Warren, half of the famed hair care line and salons Warren/Tricomi. Although our meeting at the Ulta on State Street was quick, he was able to answer a few of my hair care questions.
When did your interest in hair design begin?
It’s funny. One of my girlfriends said I’m good with my hands and that’s when it really started. I wanted to be a chef, but I’m a social person so the kitchen was no place for me. I wanted a creative outlet and I started playing around with my friends’ hair, and that’s really how it began.
What hair care product or tools could you not live without?
Our strengthener [Warren/Tricomi Pure Strengthener]. It’s the best and the fastest working product of its kind. Unlike a conditioner, it helps fix hair cuticles by closing them to lock in moisture. When your cuticles are closed, you get healthier, shinier hair! And it’s also an award-winning product.
We are all looking forward to the summer here in Chicago. Any tips on making the hair color transition from winter to summer?
Hair color is something that is personal and something that needs to evolve. Grey and gloomy weather does not necessarily dictate a darker head of hair. It’s really about what you like—it’s an emotional, personal decision rather than a seasonal.
What runway or red carpet looks do you think will last in terms of hair design?
Extensions will stick around as long as people have hair they want to change. We actually make clip-on bangs, which instantly change your look but you won’t have to wait 6 months for them to grow out. Hollywood has a big influence today. They [celebrities] are relatable people and they often dictate what we want to see on ourselves. As for runway looks, they are too extreme for everyday hair. Either the looks are simple and slicked back or they are too avant-garde to be worn realistically.
