Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen's illustrious clothing label Elizabeth and James, named after their two siblings, debuted in Fall 2007. As portrayed through their line, the clothing is meant to have a balance between delicate feminine details and androgynous masculine features. For instance, you can pair an Elizabeth and James silk pleated cami with a boyfriend blazer. With the success of Elizabeth and James, the twins have decided to launch the menswear label, The Row. In the men's line, there is a balance between downtown and uptown. Mary-Kate insists, "That's not literal, its just a reference to fabrics and the risks people are willing to take in the ways they dress." One thing's for sure, Mary-Kate and Ashley are huge fashion risk takers so it only makes sense they would produce a fashion-forward line of apparel for men.

The Row has been said to have a rugged downtown style with mildly trendy silhouettes. And of course, the label will come with numerous wearable options. In regards to a coat with removable shearling lining, Mary-Kate has stated the reason for this is "because dudes want options." So eloquent, that Mary-Kate.

If men love anything, it's being able to wear a piece of clothing as many times as possible in a multitude of ways. Therefore, they are willing to pay more for something they know they will get great wear out of. The Olsen's have declared that is why The Row apparel will become investment pieces for men, priced at the higher end of contemporary clothing, just below the price points of designer.

As of now, The Row will be sold exclusively at Barney's New York. However, the twins hope to target other specialty stores as a future home for the menswear brand. For now ladies, you can purchase Elizabeth and James at any high-end fashion retailer, such as Nordstrom and Saks.

One Response to Olsen’s “Elizabeth and James” Label Branches into Menswear: The Row

  1. Kat says:

I’m actually quite glad the Olsens are doing well, and think the Elizabeth and James line is decent… but I took a look at the fashion as it translated off the runway and it looked HORRENDOUS! The images on the site are gorgeous, but the actual clothes look so cheap and tacky! I’ve found better things at Target. I was really surprised how ugly some of the things looked.
