I’ve been reading a lot about shopping your own wardrobe and recession-proofing your closet. Or in other words, not buying new things. But after extensive research (i.e. my shopping spree this past weekend), I truly believe that people will still spend money on new things, they’ll just be smarter about what they purchase. After all, shopaholics will always have to shop.

Of the many tips I’ve heard and tried, I think one of the best is to invest in accessories – a smart way to update any look. A new belt can drastically change the appearance of a classic dress and the right scarf can dress up a simple jeans and tee ensemble. So, help stimulate the economy and spend your money wisely on the latest accessories.

Add an exotic texture to your outfit with J. Crew’s luxurious, yet casual “Jane” Ballet Flats ($395 at Classy enough for a work suit or the perfect finish to jeans and a sweater. Or mix and match Ted Rossi Python Bangles on your wrist to add a little edge (Small Ivory Bracelet, $95 at Also available in silver, gold, bronze or natural.

Super Stud
Speaking of edge, I love the combination of rock star and feminine. Candace Ang’s Super Candy Studded Satin Necklace balances the two perfectly, and for only $68, it’s a steal at Or punk up a ladylike look with a shiny Pyramid Stud Ring by Kenneth Jay Lane. Only $78 at

Clutch much?
I have an unhealthy obsession with envelope-style clutches. Everywhere I turn there’s a new one calling my name. Oversized, metallic, crocodile: you name it, I want it. But today’s selection includes playful polka dots by Phillip Lim and a suede number with gold metal hardware. (3.1 Phillip Lim Phyll Attache Clutch, $395 at; Halston Foxy Envelope Clutch, $995 at

The New Neon
I am trying really, really hard to buy more brightly colored clothing to offset all the black in my closet. So I was actually pleasantly surprised to see neons coming back around in very classy executions. I’m loving the subtle application of neon yellow on Rebecca Minkoff’s “Mab Mini” in Dove Grey ($635 at Or put a little fun in your outfit with Tapeet Open Toe Pumps with Neon Heel ($525 at I’d pair these with a navy suit or try them with dark jeans and a white blazer.
So get your glam on, and save money while you’re at it!
