Standard Operating Procedure…Barneys Eliminates 76 Positions.

Compared to the numbers Saks and Neiman Marcus have been reportedly laying off, 76 doesn't seem like a whole lot. Especially since 30 positions were already vacant. Yet, Barneys only has 2,400 employees nationwide. It's business as usual in the luxury retail sector, where layoffs are now commonplace.

Barneys New York disclosed it was eliminating 76 positions yesterday. The
affected jobs ranged from sales personnel to corporate posts. “They
were across the board,” said Dawn Brown, vice president of publicity
for Barneys.

“Initially, we elected to cut other expenses to save jobs as long as
possible and now the continued economic downturn has made layoffs
necessary,” Brown told WWD. The budget cuts have been made in every
division and were started last year and continued into this year, she
