Designer News. Rachel Roy Designs for (Gasp)…Macy’s?!

April 16, 2009 • Fashion

Hey you can't fault a girl for wanting/needing to make some money! Especially when you are in the beginning of a divorce from Damon Dash, have kids to support and your eponymous line is beautiful, but boarding on overpriced. As much as we love her clothes, Rachel Roy is really expensive. So enter Macy’s to snag an exclusive.

This fall, Roy will launch a contemporary lifestyle brand (that means everything form apparel and shoes to accessories for the younger generation) called Rachel Rachel Roy to be sold exclusively at Macy’s. The
collection will hit all of Macy’s 85 doors beginning in August.

Actually going after the contemporary market makes perfect sense and is probably a smart move for Macy's which already sells exclusive brands such as Tommy Hilfiger, T Tahari, Donald Trump and Martha

Terry Lundgren, chairman, chief executive officer
and president of Macy’s Inc., said he sees Rachel Rachel Roy attracting a broad range of consumers,
but the collection will particularly satisfy the twentysomething
consumer who has a tighter hold on her wallet than the traditional
contemporary shopper. (Ya think? Probably because they are all losing their jobs!)

The apparel collection, which will retail
between $59 and $299. In
addition to apparel, there will be a large selection of accessories,
including footwear, handbags and jewelry, all retailing for under $250.

“This line is the younger sister to the Rachel Roy collection. It has
the same designer sensibility but with a younger feeling,” Roy told WWD.
“This is the customer that I used to be — and maybe I still am every
once in a while.”

Actually some of looks pretty good…from afar.
