We have kept rather quiet about Bravo's new “The Fashion Show,” and a few of you have called us on it. The reason we really have not said anything is because we want to give it another shot (episode) before we ruled it a dud. Let's put it this way, we were not wowed. In fact, Carol and I both had the same reaction…eh.
Apparently we were not the only ones feeling non-plussed. The “Project Runway” replacement, featuring Isaac Mizrahi, Kelly Rowland (formerly of Destiny’s Child), IMG senior vice president Fern Mallis and Harper’s Bazaar’s Laura Brown —
drew 890,000 average viewers, according to Nielsen. Yes, we agree with WWD, that figure blows away the first episode of “Project Runway,” at 354,000 viewers, but
you are comparing them to a show nobody knew anything about at that time. Considering Bravo has gone to great lengths to advertise it's Project Runway replacement continuously in the months leading up to the premier, the numbers were not impressive. Also, Project Runway averaged 2.4 million viewers during its fifth
and final season on Bravo.
Here is the deal, we liked Isaac Mizrahi, but he is no Michael Kors when it comes to snarky one liners. We also don't understand the Kelly Rowland (a singer) in the Heidi Klum role. What does she know about fashion? The designers are all somewhat established and annoying. We liked the idea of designers who were virtual unknowns. Most importantly it seems our Chicago contestant is not going to be long for the season, so we are bummed. We slo-moed through the footage of the upcoming season which was aired at the end of the show, and Kristin was missing. So we believe she is out very quickly…and we hate to admit we agree with that decision based on what we saw in the first episode.
Let's put it this way, so far the show isn't deserving of our weekly recaps. We are Project Runway purists I'm afraid.
Fern Mallis told WWD future episodes will feature Charlotte Ronson, Erin Fetherston, Peter Som, Norma Kamali and Vivienne Tam. “We still have two episodes left to tape, including the finale in July,” she said.
