Summer Trend Report. Get Your Ne-on!

June 2, 2009 • Fashion

While the weather still refuses to yield into crisp, blue skies and glorious sunshine, we suggest channeling summer from these bright and splashy pieces and infusing some pizazz into your everyday wardrobe. Neon accents are a fun and summery way to spice up some borderline blah neutrals for both work and for play, though they can be tricky to integrate — too much of a good thing and everyone in the office will be wondering who spiked the water cooler. So the best bet when contemplating neon is to keep it simple, balanced, and in moderate proportion to the rest of your ensemble.

Many designers this season have been serving up pieces that pack just the right amount of punch with vibrant color block panels, stripes, and piping. This more minimal amount of color on a neutral can still be appropriate for day, and then easily kicked up a notch for an evening out by adding some baubles and equally daring shoes.

For more of a bold statement, find one piece in a shade of the rainbow you've been dying to try and keep the rest of the outfit almost absent of color altogether, preferably gray, black or white. This contrast maximizes the vibrancy of your chosen hue without being too fussy or over the top. This combination can work well with the neon color featured either over or under the neutral shade.

Still not convinced this look is for you? You can always ease into any seasonal trend by keeping your reservations at arms (or legs!) length. Try an accessory — grab a handbag in a versatile color but with accents in bright oranges, greens, pinks or yellows. This way you can still have fun with some color without the need to commit yourself entirely. Same thing with shoes — slide into a neutral pair that have unique shades in their embellishing or accents and they will instantly provide your outfit with polish that pops. Whatever dose of color you choose to inject into your neutral go-to pieces, just remember to keep it simple and always have fun!
