When looking for a new innovative designer to take the reigns of a high end label, its always smart to find someone who likes to practice what they preach. This was seemingly the case for Diesel's head Renzo Rosso in his search for new talent to take over the denim line's top shelf Black Gold label. Rosso had only to look to the famously noir-clad designer Sophia Kokosalaki to find a perfect fit. The Greek designer and former creative director of Vionnet, Kokosalaki has become known through the hip, urban styles of her label as well as from designing costumes for the 2004 Athens Olympics.
Besides constantly appearing in Black Gold's signature color, the young designer seems a good fit for Diesel in other ways as well. Diesel's parent company, Only The Brave, bought out Kokosalaki's signature line several years back. With this new collaboration, the designer will get her namesake line back but has agreed to forgoe the September shows of Fashion Week in order to revitalize the Diesel Black Gold line. Rosso seems enthused by Kokosalaki coming on board. He recently noted,“[Kokosalaki’s] talent is incredible. Her taste in high-end fashion is
already known, but what people do not necessarily expect from her is
her skill in dealing with denim and contemporary casual, the core of
Diesel Black Gold."
