Makes Hair Styling Easy and Affordable
Candid Questions and Answers from Jaclyn Smith and her long time friend and hair stylist José Eber.
JS:Jaclyn, describe your hair care routine:
"I don't wash my hair every day – unless I'm on a film or a photo shoot. I try to take breaks from daily shampoos and other products. That way I give my hair a chance to rest and let the natural oils work back into my hair. I use non-detergent shampoos unless I want to deep clean my hair. I finish with a cool-to-cold rinse. The cold rinse seals the hair's cuticle – and brings a natural shine to my hair. For shinier hair, rinse with cool-to-cold water."
JS:Do you have a favorite shampoo and conditioner?
"I try rotating a few favorite shampoos – you'll find that changing shampoos will bring out the best in your hair. Some may give it shine, some will add body and some will make your hair softer. You will learn what shampoo works best for you depending on what you want for that particular day. Knowing how your hair reacts to different products will help you to decide what hair care routine works best for you. Surprise your hair with different shampoos.
Regarding conditioning at least once-a-month I use a heavier, deep conditioner. On a day off — or a day at home doing paperwork or household chores — or even during a bath or exercise, I apply a conditioner, then wrap my hair with plastic wrap or, if you have longer hair, tie it up in a ponytail. I also think the use of a heat cap is beneficial for deep conditioning.
Another great tip — try Mayonnaise straight from the jar."
JS:What about hair color?
"Since I color my hair, and I want the color to last, I try to avoid all products that contain alcohol. The color I use on my roots does not have ammonia or peroxide in it. The color may not last as long, but my hair is healthier and shinier. Alcohol can cause stripping of color.
Whether or not you color your hair, it's helpful to strip-off the build-up of residues from hair products, and from the environment."
Use this handy cleansing recipe:
Add 1/2 cup white vinegar to 1 quart boiling water.
Let solution cool and apply to just washed hair.
Finish with a cool to cold rinse.
JS:What is the STYLE Collection for Paula Young®?
"I like hair styles that are classic and timeless. My new STYLE Collection for Paula Young is an amazing, affordable collection of wigs, falls, hairpieces, volumizers and clip-ons that are both flattering and fun to wear. There is no need to be afraid of change!
The key to finding your own style is knowing what looks best on you and not necessarily what's on the cover of a fashion magazine. You can't assume a style you like in a photograph is going to work for you. You have to find your own individual style. Look at your height, weight and coloring. Look at your total self. Find a style that compliments your face. This hair collection is for those who are suffering from medical hair loss, as well as those women who may want more volume, a new look, a special occasion up-do and more.the options are as unique as the wearer."
José Eber, "stylist to the stars", has become synonymous with beauty throughout the world. José believes that every woman has star potential if she will recognize her own unique beauty and appreciate the characteristics and traits that make her special and different. He puts it this way, "I don't make women beautiful, I show them that they already are."
JE:José, Jaclyn's fans often write to us asking about Jaclyn's haircut . What can you tell us?
"Jaclyn has always been comfortable with a mid-to-long length. Through the years I have cut her hair slightly shorter or longer — depending on the project she's working on, but her hair has always been layered . long layering, short layering, invisible layering .
For Jaclyn, I've always cut layers framing her face and invisible bangs which can be worn as bangs or swept to the side. Her current cut has more layers which provides a narrow look, and the length is cut just above her collar bone. Jaclyn favors long hair and it works so beautifully for her. And, believe it or not, long-ish hair is actually easier to maintain."
JE:Why are layers so important?
"Wavy hair, like Jaclyn's demands layers because when you have lots of hair that is naturally wavy or curly, cutting it all one length tends to produce a pyramid shape which is not flattering and just doesn't work well."
JE:What special advice do you have for Jaclyn's fans?
"You have to be realistic. If you have fine or thin hair, your hair will not look like Jaclyn's – no matter what the cut is or who cuts it. But there are many fashion styles today and you will find one to be right for you.
Also, don't be a slave to trends . And, don't let your age dictate your choice of style. There is no age limit when choosing a hairstyle. Your haircut and style will be fashionable as long as it fits your personality and your lifestyle."
JE:José, if you could share just one special tip with us – what would it be?
"Here's a favorite of mine. I recommend washing your hair only 2-3 times per week to prevent stripping the natural oils from your hair. This is not to say that you cannot wet your hair every morning to style it, but you do not need to wash it every day. Every client that I have told this to has thanked me, and said it has changed and improved their hair's texture."
JE:What is the safest hair coloring process?
"The safest is to find a good colorist at a good salon! And . do not over process. Over processing will damage your hair. The products are not the problem — the problem is the way you use them."
JE:Can you offer a few style tips for different hair types?
"There is no set rule. There is no set style. Today you can be free to be almost anything. You can wear a bob, a French bob, long layers, a shag, short hair, big hair…almost anything. Most important is to work with what you have. Unfortunately, too many people want to fight their natural hair. People who have thick and curly hair fight with it to be straight and flat — or those with thin hair fight to make it bigger. Choose the length and layers to compliment your hair type, your life style and your personality. A talented hairdresser can improve on what you have and bring out the best. If you have fine thin hair and your hairdresser creates a beautiful haircut and style, you will be able to do redo it yourself because you are not fighting your hair."
JE:What is the difference between a 'style' and a 'trend'?
"OK, let me try to answer that. There are trends in hairstyles. But a trend is not a style. You can interpret any style into the trend. One year the trend could be straight and another year curly. If the trend is for curly hair, you can have anything from flat curls to big curls or very curly to wavy hair. Ten women can follow the trend of curly hair, but have ten different individual beautiful styles."
JE:Do you suggest that someone bring a picture from a magazine to their hairdresser?
"Yes, a picture could be a great inspiration for your hairdresser to understand what you want and where you want to go. It's a good idea to bring in a visual as a basic start. The reality is you will not look exactly the same as the picture. You and your hairdresser need to create an interpretation of the picture for your hair and your edge and personality. It is important that your hairdresser understands you . and your hair . and not just copy a picture."
JE:Which products are best for thick — or thin hair when blow drying?
"If your hair is thick and you're looking for silky shiny hair use a silicone base to help you blow dry your hair softly. If you hair is weak and limp, use a volumizing base to help make the hair stronger and hold the volume."
JE:And lastly, José, do you have a basic recipe to keep hair healthy?
"Yes. It is important to find the right products for your hair, and to use the right tools. A shampoo and conditioner combination should give the hair the body, manageability and shine you want. And using the right tools- like a hair brush of boars bristle and nylon and a non-static wide-tooth comb will help. It's what I use for Jaclyn."
