Fashion World Learns To Laugh Along With Bruno

Cohen's character Bruno storming the runway of Agatha Ruiz de Prada's runway at Italian Fashion Week last year

Tomorrow will bring the highly anticipated release of Sacha Baron Cohen's second character comedy, Bruno. Based on Cohen's creation of a tragically clueless, obnoxiously over-the-top German fashion maven, Bruno has set out to make a lighthearted jibe at the no nonsense world of couture. But do the designers get the joke?

Last year during filming, that definitely not seem the case with designers such as Agatha Ruiz de la Prada getting understandably upset as Cohan crashed into the backstage of her Milan spring 2009 runway show wearing an entirely Velcro suit and sticking relentlessly to her collection. De la Prada, like the other designers featured in the film, were unaware that Bruno's character was a gag and so responded accordingly with sending out official warnings to other labels during Italian Fashion Week. WWD quoted the designers as recalling,“I was furious with that man. He was violent. He pushed my art director
to the floor and scared the models. But there he was, turning my show into a nightmare, and I wanted to
kill him.”

Other shows Bruno was able to worm himself into included Iceberg, Mariella Burani, and Roberto Musso, all with the same less than welcoming response. But now on the eve of the movie's debut all seems to have been forgotten. Luckily for Bruno and Cohen alike, no serious measures were taken against him, only enough to further define his signature, envelope-pushing dynamic. When asked today about the foolish character who appears throughout the movie in designers such as Alexander McQueen, Roberto Cavalli, Raf Simons, Gucci, Dolce & Gabbana, Thierry Mugler, and Dsquared2,de la Prada has an entirely different view. “I am happy with it now,” she said. “It can be amusing, no? Besides, he’s
given me a lot of publicity.”
