Maybelline Replaces M.A.C. as New York Fashion Week’s Cosmetic Sponsor

July 13, 2009 • Beauty

Maybelline New York has managed to stay on top as one of the best-selling makeup brands in the global mass market. As a testament to its continuing success despite the fledgling economy, the makeup label is reportedly close
to signing a deal with the heads of New York fashion week which would allow it to become on one of the event's lead sponsors. A division of the Paris-based Loreal, Maybelline has held fashion sponsorships before in Europe, but has never played a role in the Bryant Park shows before. The sponsorship deal currently in the works is said to cover a two-year period for both the September and February shows, first in Bryant Park and then at Lincoln Center.

This new deal followed the announcement that M.A.C. cosmetics, the former makeup label to head up the Bryant Park shows, was withdrawing its sponsorship. Rumors have formed that M.A.C. is setting its sights on the runway shows and presentations at Milk Studios instead, though nothing has officially been confirmed. Although M.A.C. has decided that it will no longer sponsor fashion week in Bryant Park, it will continue its tradition of doing all the backstage makeup for the various shows.

For those of us who have covered Fashion Week for years, this is another step backwards…kinda like the McDonald's recession coffee bar. Not a good thing. High fashion is becoming low rent! Tres sad.
