Celebrity Trends. Should We Copy The Teens?

July 15, 2009 • Celebrity Style

Back at the local mall for the day, I noticed something a little bit interesting. Sure, the stores were overrun with plaid print shirts, shift dresses, and neon but that wasn’t the only thing swarming.

Teenagers have taken over the mall! And not only the teenagers themselves but their teenager stores as well. Armani Exchange, Zara, Delias, Guess, American Apparel, H&M, PacSun, Delia’s and Urban Outfitters.

They say teenagers are the only ones who are recession-proof in these troubling times and it seems like the East Coast believes it as so! The mall that I went to, catered accordingly.

So what do you when you can’t afford the pricey boutiques of NYC, the luxe lines at Net-a-Porter and Neiman Marcus, the designers at ShopBop and Intermix?

Retail, retail, retail!

Surprisingly, if you careful pick the racks at these less-than-luxe locations, you’ll be to find exactly what you need. Even if you don’t dress exactly like those teens, you can find pieces here and pieces there to add to your collection. I found lots of floral print tops and dark floral dresses, technicolor pencil skirts, racerback tees, dresses galore, and funky patterned plaid shirts that, worn with the right black jeans and accessories, that look like they came from a designer label.

And if you’re still not sure what you’re looking for, take a cue from the teens themselves. It seems more and more that teens are dressing as fashionably as their older female counterparts and they know what they’re doing.

Here are some of the teens celebs I’ve seen lately that embody that movement.

Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez (l to r)

BFFs Demi Lovato and Selena Gomez have a style we’d all die for.  Check out Demi in this Alexander Wang bustier minidress and Selena in ultra-cool skinny  jeans, tan Gold Hawk top, and Stephan Webster cuff bracelet.

Taylor Momsen

If you’re into dressing tough but femme, take a look at teen Taylor’s Momsen’s punk-edge Gossip Girl look. Motorcycle jacket and hot pink mini is the way to go.

Emma Watson

There's a reason why 19-year old Emma Watson was named the new face of Chanel.  Her style is trendsetting, yet timeless. Check out this piped Christopher Kane sheath with a 3.1 Phillip Lim clutch.

Hayden Panettiere

The "I Love You, Beth Cooper" star loves her nude pumps and peep toes and this encrusted Zac Posen top and skirt!

Emma Roberts

Julia Roberts 16-year-old niece dresses better then she does! (Sorry, but I had to say it.) She's so futuristic space age chic and I love the white round-toe pumps against the opaque tights. Think the polka dotted top is a shirt or a dress?

Zoe Kravitz

Did Lenny Kravitz's 18-year old daughter inherit her style prowess from dear old dad? Could be. The one thing we know for sure is this indie star sure knows how to dress!
