All Hail The Celebrity Gladiator Boot!

We all know most celeb trendsetters are conscious about their clothes. But what about what’s on their feet?

Peeptoes, pumps, and stacked heels are all good — but gladiators and booties top the list so high, it’s the second summer in a row the trend has exploded on the streets. And they’ve hit an extreme. Gone are the mere gladiator flats with the tiny straps. They are replaced by knee-length sandals, wedges, booties, and peeptoes of a different kind. There’s something about a structural, sculpted, architectural shoe that’s just so breathtaking.

It isn’t only excessive glamour girls like Lady Gaga and Rihanna that are wearing gladiators. Good girls like Vanessa Hudgens and Liv Tyler may be quiet in their style risk-taking, but they’re not quiet in the shoe department. Let’s see what I mean.

Knee-Length Gladiator Sandals
Gladiators sandals have been seen on the likes of Charlize Theron, Kim Kardashian, and Naomi Watts. They’ve turned into the must-have shoe of the summer. So then why are many stars choosing the extreme—replacing their ankle-length pairs with a larger, more prominent knee-length fixture.

Maybe it’s because these babies stand out even when worn with rompers, pencil skirts, Bermuda shorts, and form-fitting dresses. Ashley Tisdale looked casual cool in her rocker shades and knee-length sandals. Mary-Kate Olsen wore her Chanel stompers with a tight black dress and a fringe bag. Ashley’s outfit was a little more lively and her yellow pencil-skirt and her unusual Azzedine Alaia gladiators.

Remember when Rihanna wore those ’08 Balenciaga babies?

Gladiator Booties
My favorite pair of shoes have suddenly been seen all over the runways and on all the celebs. They’re a little bit gladiator, a little bit boot, and a whole lot of fun.

They are beautifully crafted and to the extreme. Each pair is unique and statement-making without being overbearing. Liv Tyler wore a popular Givenchy bootie with a boot like shaft over the ankle and criss crossed bottom. Lauren Conrad looked like she was wearing butterflies on her feet when she added the Christian Louboutin Sometimes boot to her poofy red and blue dress at the MTV Movie Awards.

Cut-Out Peeptoe Booties
Oxford booties and ankle boots were all over the Fall runways and all over the streets, but it’s the versions I saw on celebs like Ginnifer Goodwin and Cassie that really made an explosive statement. Simply cut a hole into your favorite Oxfords and you have a peep toe bootie and you have a pair? Not exactly.

What makes these shoe stunners so—well—stunning? Take a look at Ginnifer’s sophisticated and glamorous Merchante of London shoes or the white peep toe booties of Teen Vogue’s Accessories Director Sarah Kuhn. Enough said.
