Beauty Event & Giveaway! Pantene Pro-V Presents 3 of Fall’s Hottest Hair Trends…and a Giveaway!

Headshot (WinCE)
Hallie Bowman

This past Tuesday I attended a Pantene Pro-V event where celebrity hairstylist Hallie Bowman demonstrated three hot hairstyle trends for Fall '09. Surprisingly I loved them all and learned a ton of styling tips in the process. Fortunately, I am going to share them with you. Read on, because at the end, there is a giveaway for 5 lucky readers!

Anyway, we all know the economy is in the toilet, but that doesn't mean your hair shouldn't continue to look fashion forward. You need not spend a ton on products, nor do you have to run out and acquire the latest trendy designer haircut every 3 months. In fact, Fall '09 is all about styling what you already have. Start out with a great basic hairstyle that's easy to maintain and try one of the following three hairstyles that works on pretty much any hair type shoulder length or longer.

So what's hot for hair this fall? Well, there was a lot of mixing of textures on the runway. Take for instance the slicked back half-up with crimped half-down style shown at Bottega Veneta. Some of the runway looks were a little crazy to pull of in every day life, but you can make them a little softer to work for you. Also, there is a bit of a modern twist on 80's hair. Before you get scared (like I was) it's softer and updated to be a little more modern (no roach clips in your hair or Joan Collins helmet heads, please).

The Lob

One cut you are going to see a lot of for fall it s the 'Lob' (a longer bob). It is the same shape as the bob as in it's shorter in the back than in the front, but this modern take swings at the shoulders. Perfect for fine hair, you can find Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Hathaway sporting this updated do.

To take it from day to night, Hallie added some beachy loose waves. Now if you are like me, you have been doing it wrong so listen up. I am going to help set you right.

DO NOT curl from the bottom up which just curls the ends. Today's waves start at the root.

How to Get the Style:
* Start by using the Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Shampoo and Conditioner to protect hair against damage and create fullness that lasts all day.
* Apply Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Mousse from root to tip on damp hair.
* Blow dry hair while lifting hair away from scalp, periodically flipping hair over for lots of volume. (note: be sure to completely dry crown with head upside down to ensure the most volume in the right spot)
* Wrap big sections of hair around a 1-inch barrel curling iron, wrapping from root to end for deep, tousled waves. (note: wrapping from tip to root creates barrel curls)
* Do not clamp down
* Count to 4
* As you pull the section off the barrel, twist it a bit more in your fingers and pull down gently.
* Let go
* When you are finished with curling your entire, head…do not be afraid to brush your hair (Hallie recommends a Mason Pearson or boar bristle brush) for a more polished look. It won't destroy the curl.
* Complete the look by applying Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Smoothing Crème to define waves and fight frizz.

** Try a really deep side part for evening (think Robert Palmer girl). See the last picture above for an example.

** Another tip…use high-end hot tools (not products). The cheap ones will do much more damage to your hair (I can attest to this.)

The Up-Do Upgrade

If you have medium length hair, why not try this fabulous Up-do Upgrade (pictured above)? What's upgraded about it? The chignon (or donut bun) is sleek while the front is messy. Or try the reverse and keep the top part of your hair slicked back and the bun messy. Again, it's all about mixing textures.

How to Get the Style:
* Start by washing hair with the Pantene Pro-V Moisture Renewal Shampoo and Conditioner to keep hair hydrated with a smooth finish.
* Blow dry hair using a natural or combination bristle brush.
* Begin the style by pulling your hair into a low ponytail and securing it with a hair bungee (2 hooks) or elastic band (a bungee won't budge and it won't pull your hair_. Leave some pieces out around the face)
* Spray the ponytail and loose strands with the Pantene Pro-V Texture Spray Wax to give yourself a malleable but thick texture to work with.
* Roll the ponytail from ends to root, creating a barrel roll (see picture above).
* Holding the ends of the barrel with one hand, wrap the roll around the bungee in a donut shape (fan it) and secure it to your head with pins.
* For the sections around the face, wrap around a medium-sized curling iron, wrapping from root to end for loose tousled waves (like in the Lob example).
* Complete the look by using the Pantene Pro-V Ice Shine Hairspray all over the hair to add shine and secure the style in place.

Half-Up Glam

I have to say the Half-Up Glam style seen above (and on Angelina Jolie at the Oscars) was my favorite. It’s a modern twist on the classic half-up style with just enough edge for those with long or medium length hair.

How to Get the Style:
*Start by using the Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Smooth Vitality Shampoo and Conditioner to tame frizz and fly-aways.
*Distribute the Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Smoothing Crème evenly throughout wet hair to keep locks looking smooth and frizz-free all day.
*Blow dry hair using a natural or combination bristle brush.
*Begin the style by creating a deep side part (think 80s!) on both sides.
* Bring the middle section forward (you will come back to it later) and use a clip to keep it on the top of your head.
* Collect sections of hair on sides of head, leaving a 2-inch section of hair out on top of the head for use later, then slick sides of hair back and collect with a bungee or clear elastic band at crown of head.
* Spray top section of hair with Pantene Pro-V Texture Spray Wax to add to make hair more malleable.
* Pull top section (or reserved middle section) of hair back, leaving volume at the top, and secure at crown of head with pins; this will conceal elastic band for a clean finish. You want it to look swept up, not pinned so conceal those pins!
* To lock in style, finish with a spritz of Pantene Pro-V Classic Flexible Hold Aerosol Hairspray.

Hallie and her 'finished' girls

Hallie also showed us an amazing and easy way to crimp your hair that's quick and safer for your hair than one of those awful crimping irons that just makes your hair look fried (and too 80's) anyway…

Updated crimping technique

How to Crimp Your Hair:
* Take a U shaped hair clip (looks like a bobby pin) and wrap your hair in and out of the two prongs like a figure 8. (see above picture)
* Take your flat iron and press down on the hair for about 5 seconds.
* Release and use your fingers to separate.

Pantene full & thick will work best for me. I have fine, thin, but shiny hair and I am dying to get the Lob!

  2. Raha says:

Lob,since my hair is the prefect length for it 🙂

  3. Robin says:

Gotta love the half-up glam!! I have long, slightly wavy hair, so this is a fun (and fairly easy) look for me. And the Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick line is just the thing I need to pull it off!

  4. paula says:

My hair is long and I loved the half up glam. I can’t wait to try it!!!
I always used Pantene ProV. They are my favorites. My last purchase was the nature Fusion collection which leaves my hair amazing!!!

  5. Christie says:

I like the Lob best and it is how I have my hair cut now. It does work for fine hair.

  6. Rachael says:

Ah, I love the Lob, mostly because I have a more modern version of that 🙂 And as I have thin, fine, and easily damaged hair the thick and full would work amazing 🙂

  7. Ramona Byram says:

I like the Half Up Glam ‘do best. My hair would need the Pantene Pro-V Moisture Renewal Collection.

  8. Coco says:

I really love the half-up glam! My hair is permed with a wave and reaches a length similar to the model’s, so the hairstyle is great inspiration! Since my hair’s permed, the Nature Fusion collection should probably help with any damage!

  9. Heather says:

Lob because it looks fresh and sleek! And I have flat hair, especially at the crown of my head. I think Pantene Full & Thick sounds perfect 🙂

  10. anna s. says:

I really like the Lob- I am one of those gals that loves to have longer hair but cannot maintain it, so i end up with medium length 🙂 Since my hair is slightly wavy, I think i can master this new look quite easily. The other reason why I like the hairstyle is because my hair becomes quite limp and lifeless due to excessive hair loss, and i have to find hairstyle and products that can make my hair look healthy and full of volume. A combination of Lob hairstyle and Pantene products is a perfect way to start my new hair routine! I definitely want to try the Full and Thick Pantene collection 🙂

  11. michelle rosborough says:

I like the Lob hairstyle and the Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Collection would work best on my hair

  12. Dee Levi says:

After a year of unemployment, I finally found a job and find myself back at the office. However, this means that I must now dress work appropriate, and while I have the suits and the button downs covered, I absolutely hate pulling my hair back…it’s naturally curly but I spend endless amounts of time blow drying it into soft waves so having to pull it back in a ponytail in the morning is depressing…which is why the half up look is so perfect!!! It lets me showcase my (hard earned) long and loose waves, while still pulling back the front so the look is polished and (perhaps borderline but that’s good enough for me) work appropriate…LOVE it. Thanks for the great tips and tutorial!

  13. Eve says:

The Up-Do Upgrade is the cutest style to me. I also like it because it is dressy and not as clean as the normal buns. And the Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Collection works best for my hair and makes it soft.

  14. VIcki says:

I really like the crimp look! It looks almost more like waves than the 80’s tight crimps look. Could you do a more detailed tutorial on the part with the U-pin? My “braid” doesn’t quite look like the one in your picture. Thanks for the great info!

  15. hofken says:

My favorite look is the lob – thanks for the hints. I’d like to try the Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Collection

  16. Rachael Williams says:

I love the half up glam! I have naturally curly hair so this look always works for me. I love Pantene’s Ice Shine Shampoo & Conditioner and more recently have fallen in love with the Beautiful Lengths Shampoo & Conditioner. They make my hair so manageable!

  17. Lisa says:

I’d love to put my hair in an Up-do Upgrade, but it would never hold.
The Nature Fusion Collection would work best with my hair.
    Thanks for the giveaway!

  18. Theresa says:

I love the Lob hairstyle because it’s such a chic and modern cut. My hair is quite short right now but I am planning to grow it out to achieve the Lob. As for Pantene products, the Pantene Pro-V Moisture Renewal Collection would work wonders for my hair because it is incredibly dry from color treatment and blow-drying.

  19. Jennifer McCullar says:

I’d have to have the Lob, it looks simple and elegant to do. I need to break out of the new mom hair do. Gwyneth Paltrow makes it look beautiful, but I would want it because it would be the best fit for my hair. I already use the Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Shampoo and Conditioner. I need to try the Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Mousse.

  20. peach says:

I’m in my mid 20’s and for the first time in my LIFE have long hair. As a child my mom would chop all my hair off into a cropped cut (helloooo trauma). Being so used to having short hair for many many years, I’ve been keeping my hair short consistently for my life thus far and my hair has never been past shoulder length… until now! I’m a total long hair newbie and now that my hair has finally grown out (about 6 inches below the shoulders) I’ve been sort of at a loss about what to do with it.
I’d really love to try the Pantene Pro-V Moisture Renewal Collection and the Up-do Upgrade. The Moisture Renewal Collection sounds ideal for me because allowing my hair to grow out has left the ends slightly… well… dried out. Since I have never had long hair, this has never been a problem for me, but now that I haven’t had a trim for some time, I can see that the ends need a bit of help! The Moisture Renewal Shampoo and conditioner are just what I need to give the tips of my hair the moisture and shine that they desperately need. This combination of products would help keep my new long hair pretty and sleek and the perfect texture for styling.
The Up-do upgrade looks like the perfect summer do- having had short hair all these years I’m not yet quite used to having a mass off hair adding all that extra heat to my face and body and and updo sounds like a great solution. I love how quick and easy to style the up-do upgrade is. It also looks effortless enough for casual situations, and elegant enough for going out or for professional matters. During the summer I have class in the early mornings (noooooooo!) so a quick, but stylish do is right up my alley. It’s a great way to experiment with my hair length and also looks great!

  21. Sonia says:

I have long thick wavy hair that is rather dry so I would go for moisture lock. I’m a dedicated Pantene girl! I am for sure gonna try the half up do with the new crimp. Looks like the perfect date night hair!

  22. Amber says:

I’ve been thinking my hair needs…something. I’m thinking the lob might be it! Thanks so much for this post! For me, it’d have to be the Full and Thick Collection. I have such sad, baby fine hair.

  23. Sarah D. says:

I really liked the Lob and have a similar hairstyle currently. I use the Pantene Pro-V Full & Thick Collection and love it.

  24. my favorite out of the three would have to be the half-up style because it can be turned into a casual hairtstyle by leaving it straight, and it can also be “dressed up” by curling or waving my hair. 🙂
i think the full and thick or the moisture renewal would work best for me. :d

  25. My favorite hairstyle is the Lob and it would work best for my hair type. I would love to try the Pantene Pro-V Full and Thick collection on my super fine hair.

  26. becky says:

i would pick full and thick because i have long hair and by the end of the day it does not feel full! i have tried tons of shampoos to make my hair feel more full but have not found one that has worked for more then a couple hours. i love the lob and might have to try this for fall! but because my hair feels straggly by the end of the day i usually throw it up. i am excited to try the updated bun! thanks for all the tips and this great chance!

  27. Keisha says:

I really love the lob, its so cute! I will def be getting this cut very soon (: thanks for the pictures!!! I really like this hairstyle because its not to long and its not to short. I hate having long hair because in the summer its way to hot! And my hair is really thick so when its long its harder to work with. And I don’t want to go to short, so this is the perfect hairstyle and you can go from day to night in a snap (:
I think Pantene Pro-V Nature Fusion Collection would be best for my hair, because my hair is VERY DRY and damaged.

  28. Keisha says:

oppps just realized that this giveway ended in 2009!!!!
