WWD reported this morning that 9/11 nonprofit organization, MyGoodDeed, will be teaming up with Fashion Week sponsor IMG Fashion to launch an innovative, new way to raise funds during Fashion Week. A designer online auction titled, "Runway to Service" will debut this year with the intent of having Fashion Week designers donate one piece of clothing from their spring collections to auction off. Since President Obama recently declared 9/11 as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, members from both MyGoodDeed and IMG wanted to spearhead a new way for the fashion industry to show its support. “We think the fashion community is one of the most important in
this country,” said David Paine, president and founder of MyGoodDeed. "[The initiative]
with Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is part of a national effort to encourage people
throughout the U.S. and outside of the U.S. to remember the events of Sept. 11
by doing good deeds,” Paine added. “We are trying to rekindle the spirit of
unity and selflessness that we had after the attacks."
IMG Fashion echoed the enthusiasm of MyGoodDeed for the project. “We are
delighted to work with MyGoodDeed, one of the most respected 9/11 organizations,
to make this year a very special commemoration in honor of Sept. 11 officially
becoming a National Day of Service,” said Fern Mallis, senior
vice president of IMG.
The auction and its cause are quickly gaining popularity among the designer circle. So far the names and labels signed up include Donna Karan, Phillip Lim, Tommy Hilfiger,
Rachel Roy, Carmen Marc Valvo, James Coviello, Charlotte Ronson, Milly, Tibi,
Vivienne Tam, Tracy Reece, Rebecca Taylor, Max Azria, BCBG Max Azria and Hervé
The "Runway to Service" charity auction will run from September 11th to September 30th with sales of the items going to support both 9/11 and fashion charities, including Fashion For All.
