Falling Forward: Looking Ahead To Spring 2010

With Spring/Summer 2010 collections in full swing at NYC fashion week, it is no surprise that many of us have already started looking forward to next spring. However, it is not technically even fall 2009 yet, so we’ll be waiting quite a while for these pieces to hit the stores (and in most places, for the clothes to be even remotely weather-appropriate). On the other hand, why not plan ahead when you are selecting your fall wardrobe? Here are five items to pick up now that will still be chic come spring:

The Leather Jacket. This William Rast leather jacket is true biker chic, but the honey brown hue is unexpected and softer than the typical black, making it the perfect partner for spring’s saturated pastels and pale neutrals.

Sheerly Special. Filmy layers of sheer chiffon were all over the runways; fortunately, you don’t have to wait for warm weather because sheer blouses and dresses make ideal layering pieces. For instance, something like this rich navy Moschino Cheap and Chic ruffled blouse is great under a cardigan or jacket in the winter, and on its own with a pencil skirt in the summer – and you can’t beat that ruffled neckline for pure drama.

Something Blue. Speaking of rich navy, all shades of blue are ultra stylish in the coming seasons – try deep tones as a lighter alternative to black, or offset neutrals with a shot of cobalt or cornflower. Something like this midnight colored See by Chloe leather tote would do the trick nicely.

Serious Studs. We love the Yves St. Laurent studded satchel, especially if your style has a bit of an edge to it. It’s a modern classic that works as well with a chic little black dress as it does with the aforementioned leather jacket and jeans, or you could use it to toughen up something girly.

Topping It Off. Nothing finishes an ensemble as well as a jacket that fits you like a glove and this fall is the perfect time to find your signature blazer. Whether you prefer something crisply tailored and cropped or a slouchy boyfriend style, you’ll have plenty to choose from. And who does a jacket better than preppy J. Crew? The wool herringbone blazer dresses up denim but still works for the office, and it could even work for a casual night out over a ruffled top.

The weather might be cooling down, but you can keep the spring in your style by keeping next season’s trends in mind when choosing your fall/winter wardrobe, especially when it comes to investment pieces like handbags and jackets. It is never too early to get it now!
